The Winning Goal

This is a copy of the talk I was able to give at the end of the children’s Sunday Mass on Pentecost at the parish I’m assisting this summer in Lawrence ….

Patrick Kane is one of the best hockey players in the world, and last year he scored the winning goal for the Chicago Blackhawks for them to win the Stanley Cup for the first time in 49 years. But after he scored the winning goal, nobody paid attention to the game-winning puck, and so nobody knows who picked it up. Patrick Kane is missing a big trophy and memorial and still nobody knows where the puck is.

Enter Matt Cannon. Matt is a 10-year-old boy from upstate New York, and Patrick Kane is his hero. Matt also plays hockey, and last year he scored the game-winning goal for his squirt team to win a big championship too. So after that, he took a chance, and he invited his hero Patrick Kane, the Patrick Kane, one of the world’s greatest hockey heroes today, to come to his birthday party.

So here’s his birthday party starting, and who shows up at the door, but Patrick Kane. He stays for a while, gives hockey pucks to all the kids, and plays hockey with Matt and his family and all his friends. And on that day, they became friends.

Well, last month Matt did something special. Knowing that Patrick Kane still doesn’t have his championship-winning puck, Matt sent him his own. Now, for a young guy who plays hockey, that puck is very special. See, I imagine that that puck is kept in a very special place, I bet he looks at that puck every day, and his dreams are in that puck, what he’s going to do with his life, how great it will be. I bet it’s his treasure.

He gave his hero the most valuable thing he had.

When his father asked him why, he told him, “Patrick has given me so much, so I want to give him the only thing I can that he doesn’t have.”

So just recently Matthew received a gift back from Patrick Kane. It was his puck. Only it was different. On it was Patrick Kane’s own signature. Matt got his treasure back. And it was better than ever before.

So why am I telling this story?

God comes into our lives whenever we invite Him. Yes, God Himself, who is greater than anyone could ever imagine, comes into our lives at the drop of a dime, whenever we invite Him. At our best times, when we invite Him, He’ll come. At our worst times, when we invite Him, He’ll be there, sometimes even the only one. Because He wants to be our Friend.

If you feel like God has given you so much, if you feel like He’s your hero and He’s your friend, if you want to give Him something, you can. Well, God has everything, right? What can you give to God” Everything is already His? Well there is one thing. One thing that God doesn’t have, that you have.

Your heart.

If you have a desire to give God your heart in a special way in the Church, don’t be afraid.

God will sign His own name on it. And then He’ll give it back.

Better than ever before.

“Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back.” (Lk 6:38)
