Summertime. That means gathering family, friends, neighbors and time cooking on the grill, right? You invite some people over, you go out and buy some good summer cookout food, and that’s it right?
Well, you need a cook, and you need a grill with gas. And then?
You need the lighter.
The lighter is not going to cook the food. But the lighter is going to ignite all the little flames when the gas comes. It’s all the little flames coming out of the burners that sets the grill on fire.
One lighter starts the fire that cooks all the food. One lighter makes a summer cookout a success.
When the disciples are sitting in the upper room, they’re waiting for the Holy Spirit to come. They are going to set fire to the whole world and God’s great banquet is about to begin. “I came to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it were already kindled!” (Lk 12:49) But they need to have the lighter there when the Holy Spirit comes. They need Mary with them.
We are going to be the little flames that set the world on fire, when the Holy Spirit comes. It’s a great banquet that God has, with all His family and friends and neighbors. But if we want to be ready to get lit and burn with fire, we need to be close to someone, there’s something important we need to do.
Let Mary be your lighter.
“All these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.” (Acts 1:14)
