To Jesus Through Mary

When my mother was sick with cancer, a friend of mine, Bob, came by to spend some time with us and to give us all a lift. Along with his good company, he brought food and his musical skills for all of us.

One evening he came over, and after we had all eaten dinner, he took a seat at the piano. He then proceeded to take out a large book of music, music that my mother would know and like. Soon after he began singing and playing, my mother began singing at the top of her lungs. We hadn’t seen anything like that in a long time! She enjoyed it so much, and she had such a big smile on her face, we were all so happy. She went from miserable to joyful. I was so pleased because my mother was so happy.

When Bob lifted my mother, he also lifted me.

Bob is a true friend. He is always welcome with me, for what he has done for my mother. If he ever asks me for anything, I would gladly do it.

Jesus speaks to us through His Church and asks for a few things to give His Mother a lift. For example, on the first Saturday of every month, the Church invites us to make reparation to Mary’s Immaculate Heart, for all of the suffering of her Heart. Much of the Marian songs and Marian devotions give her a lift. When we do these things, Mary goes from sorrowful to joyful. And her Son notices. He, too, goes from sorrowful to joyful.

If you console Mary, you console Jesus. “Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me.” (Mt 25:40)

If you lift up His Mother, You become a true friend to Him. “You are my friends, if you do the things that I command you.” (Jn 15:14)

And He will gladly do whatever you ask of Him. “If you shall ask me any thing in my name, that I will do.” (Jn 14:14)

  1. lol, I do the same thing, Jerome, or worse, i.e., I make up “Linda” to protect a real person, but then say her real name further down! I guess I’m just lucky that no one has picked up on it before I do!

  2. Carol, what you described – the “worse” – is exactly what I did. Except the picking up on it before someone else. Thankfully, the Lord gave me a helper to notice it quickly.

And I always pick a name that is similar in my mind to the real name…

  3. It’s such a win-win situation; when we show our devotion to Mary, Jesus is consoled and we grow closer to Him. When we are close to Jesus, Mary is pleased and intercedes with more graces. And Jesus will do anything His Mother asks. Win, win, win. I love the way you are always able to take the kind of life experiences so many of us go through and help us see them in a different way.

Gabrielle, you have touched on the mystery of what a living monstrance is!

This is an unsolicited gift given, I believe, by many many hours of Eucharistic Adoration. Adoring Jesus in the Host, seeking Him and contemplating Him truly present but hidden under the species of ordinary bread, inspires us to seek Him and adore Him truly present but hidden under the “species” of ordinary life.

The monstrance is the vessel that shows the Host for all to see. It holds before everyone the mystery of ordinary bread become Jesus, the Mysterium fidei, the mystery of faith. Everyone can than find and adore the hidden Christ.

So, the living monstrance does the same with ordinary life – he or she holds before all the mystery of ordinary life become Jesus’ Life, and so everyone can find and adore the hidden Christ.

Our Lady is the true and only Living Monstrance. We receive a participation in this by grace, if God invites us to it and we accept it.

We are going deep here! …

  5. Dear Jerome,

Well done. I read your comments in Dr. Mizzi’s blog and I totally agree with you, some of his articles were half-truths and are misleading to some catholics who are ignorant of their faith.

About Mary..it’s just beautiful to talk about her being the New Ark of the Covenant, the New Eve , by the way just google on the subjects and you can see a lot of explanations of from Catholic apologetics (ancient or modern) taken from the Scriptures and are truly biblical.

    Every Blessing!

  6. Jerome, I truly believe it is a gift, and the way you associate it so decisively and lovingly with your hours spent in Adoration is just beautiful. It’s very timely that I popped in tonight and read your response here, because I was just visiting another blogger (Cathy, of “A Bit of the Blarney), and she has a quote in her sidebar (I think she changes them often though) from Saint Gianna Beretta Molla that I think you will find as beautiful as I did: ” Our body is a cenacle, a monstrance: through its crystal, the world should see God.” You are a crystal vessel!
